Release of Information Specialist - HIM (2pm -8pm)

This position could be located at any Sanford location
Hours will be scheduled Monday - Friday from 2pm - 8:00pm and every other weekend 7:00am - 7:30pm
Works with hybrid medical record and understands complexity of record types and locations of various documents. Manages requests for medical record information from patients, attorneys, third party payers and others. Familiar with legal requirements and established procedures which govern release of information. Completes requests within established turnaround standards. Interacts with customers both in person and via telephone. Works in stressful environment with high customer demands and stringent turnaround requirements. Prepares records for legal proceedings. Assists in customer service area as needed. Must be able to communicate fluently in English. Must be able to interact with customers with limited English. Uses professional medico-legal training in managing customer requests for information. Majority of work involves use of electronic medical record and associated software applications. Minimal use of paper based record storage media.
Applies professional medico-legal training in all aspects of work. Familiar with laws and regulations governing release of information, and the content of the medical record. Knowledge of completion of medical record, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and medical terminology. Work is extremely detailed and requires a high accuracy rate to meet legal requirements. Must uphold high ethical standards and always be cognizant of the patient's right to privacy. Ability to type a minimum of 35 words per minute. Must have excellent organization skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact with a variety of customers demonstrating poise, tact and professionalism at all times. Familiar with HIPAA privacy and security regulations.
Individual will work extensively with protected health information and is required to adhere to HIPAA privacy and security regulations and policies related to same.
Required Experience
Associate degree in Health Information/Medical Record Technology (RHIT eligible) required. Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (RHIA eligible) preferred. Prior work experience in hospital HIM Department related to record maintenance completion or release of information preferred.
